This four-panel screen is adorned in hand-painted wallpaper by artists of the Gracie family studio, founded in 1898 and credited as an early importer of hand-painted wallpapers from Asia to the United States. Like a window onto an exotic idyll of bamboo and blossoms, butterflies and birds, the screen evokes the 300-year-old tradition of Chinoiserie painting while drawing natural scenery into an interior setting. In a bold gesture, SFW commissioned decorative painter Elizabeth Hargraves Mandy to embellish the screen with pops of color. Layers of customization like this one deepen the patina of a piece while keeping it fresh.
